Background: there is a lot of talk about Early Childhood Development (ECD), but what is it?
In Nepal schools rote learning and memorizing things are stressed, but this mental development is only part of the development children need. Besides mental development holistic development includes social development, emotional development and physical development
Objective:
After the broadcasting the audience will be able to:
realize that young children need to develop in a holistic way: mentally, socially, emotionally and physically.
2.Topic: Learning through playing
Background: children learn it a different way than adults. They use all their senses to build concepts and ideas from their experiences. This cannot be done by sitting in the school bench all day and listening to the teacher. Children need a different approach: learning by playing.
We have to give them things to do, to feel, to touch, to experience.
Objective:
After the broadcasting the audience will be able to:
explain how children learn in a different way from adults.
realize that young children need to learn doing and experiencing things.
3.Topic: Role of the parents in the healthy development of children
Background:
Whenever a child can walk and look after itself, Nepali parents have the idea that the biggest part of their role is done. From then on wards it’s the school teacher’s job to look after the development of the children.
But there still is a lot parents have to do for their children if they want them to develop in a healthy way. (playing with them, talking with them, creating a simulative learning environment at home)Objective

4. Topic: Discipline or guidance, myths and realities
Background: Generally discipline is thought about as punishing. But is this true? Why do we discipline? What has to be the outcome of our discipline? What way can we discipline/guide the children?

realize that discipline does not always have to be punishing
realize the negative consequences of corporal punishment
explain different ways to discipline/guide children
5. Topic: Building up children’s self confidence
Background: Scolding and punishing children has a negative influence on a child’s emotional development. How can we guide and discipline the children in a way that does not damage but develops their self confidence ?
Objective:
After the broadcasting the audience will be able to:
explain ways in which they can guide the children and build up their self confidence.
6. Topic: Causes and consequences
Background:
In Nepali society there are lot of problems because of the lack of understanding in the relation between causes and consequences.
However the relation between cause and consequence can be taught to children from a very young age. (not doing homeworkà not getting good marks; not eating healthy foodà being unwell; quarreling with friends all the time à not having close friends)

Explain why it is important for children to learn the relation between causes and consequences
Describe different ways to teach children the relation between causes and consequences
7. Topic: School bullying
Background: School bullying is a problem in many schools without teachers and parents realizing this. School bullying has a lifelong effect on the victims ánd the offenders.

8. Topic: Play way method, a new approach in ECD
Background:
The classical way of preschool teaching is the same as in the other classes of the school: learning from books and learning by memorizing. This does not fit with the way young children learn.

Background:
The play way method of teaching needs a different physical learning environment: the set up of the class room and playground has to be adjusted to this way of teaching/learning.

Background:
The play way method of teaching needs a different learning environment: there should be a loving/caring/respect full environment. (class atmosphere, the attitude of the teacher)
